The health system in the late stages of the first wave of the pandemic looks nothing like the health system of six months ago. It embraced new ways of working because of social distancing. Elective procedures were cancelled, and health professionals took on new roles. Disruptive change – advocated by many for decades – was implemented rapidly. These changes have occurred across most parts of the health system, and were often embraced by consumers and providers alike.

All are welcome to attend this Cancer and COVID special, featuring Dr Stephen Duckett, Director of the Health Program at the Grattan Institute. Dr Duckett will cover the lessons learnt in the public health system including delivering front line services and the issues we need to address for a more effective, efficient and equitable health system.

Dr Duckett’s presentation will cover the short fallings in primary care, telehealth and homecare and how rapid solutions to all these problems had to be found. He will cover what a ‘new normal’ should look like and how the health system can reposition to be better than it was before. He will also explain how the new normal should enhance the patient and carer experience and improve efficiency in primary care, mental health services and public hospital services, and be supported to achieve these goals by changes to funding, governance, and infrastructure.

Dr Duckett has a reputation for creativity, evidence-based innovation and reform in areas ranging from the introduction of activity-based funding for hospitals, to new systems of accountability for the safety of hospital care. As an Economist, he is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
